Note from Ron Link, Executive Director
I received an email from John Thomson just over a month ago. On a daily basis, I correspond with with those who have sustained problems from refractive surgery. I have learned that, in a majority of cases, the depression resulting from a failed outcome is overwhelming. The medical community has a vested responsibility to quickly respond to this urgent reality.

Eye-opener: Here's a look inside the booming world of laser procedures to correct vision. (Excellent article). Take it from us, the mention of haloes from contacts don't even begin to compare to those that can be experienced after refractive surgery.

"Morning Edition", National Public Radio, August 10, 1999.
Lasik -- NPR's Patricia Neighmond reports from Los Angeles on the growing popularity of "Lasik", a type of outpatient eye surgery that uses laser beams to correct vision in patients who are near-sighted, far-sighted, or have astigmatism. It allows many people to discard their glasses or contact lenses, but there are risks. (8:47)

The Sunday NY Times, August 8th, 1999.
Montana Representative Won't Seek Re-Election
Helena, Mont. Aug 7th.

"Citing problems with his eyes stemming from a failed operation, Representative Rick Hill said that he would not seek a third term next year as Montana's only House member.

"It was just apparent to me that I've got to focus on two things: fulfilling the duties of my office and bringing some stability to my eye problems" Mr. Hill, a Republican said on Friday. "I just don't see how I can run for re-election and do that".

Mr. Hill, 52 underwent radial keratotomy in 1995. The procedure corrects nearsightedness by slicing the cornea with a knife or shaving it with a laser to flatten it. But in his case there were complications - scar tissue formed on the cornea.

Follow-up operations have not corrected and in some ways have made his eyes worse, Mr. Hill said."

Contains a bit of misinformation as RK does not involve a laser. We are checking if Representative Hill had LASIK on top of RK.
